Balnahard Farmhouse
We are not taking any bookings for 2024 or beyond.
Renovations to the farmhouse mean it will be out of action for the foreseeable future. Please follow us on social media for updates.
Balnahard Farmhouse sits below the original farm steading looking East, its backdrop a beautiful and green valley. Balnahard Farmhouse boasts spacious and homely accommodation for up to 6 people, at the north end of the Hebridean island of Colonsay.
The house has retained all the character that comes with its West Highland heritage and is furnished with an eclectic mix of good solid period furniture, quirky accessories and modern facilities. The number of people it sleeps has been capped at six to allow guests to enjoy the generous sized rooms and space for crafting, reading, writing, cooking and jigsaw-ing.
As the road to Balnahard winds North across the coastal dunes and over the rocky pass and you get the first glimpse of the house, you will begin to appreciate how rare it is to have such beautiful surroundings on your doorstep. The stunning beaches of Kiloran and Balnahard Bays are both within easy reach of the house. Exclusive use of our private track (barring farm and estate vehicles), gives Balnahard guests a unique privilege.
Our accomodation
Thoughtful and simple decoration, practical furniture, wooden floors, colourful rugs, painted doors and shutters, cotton bed linen, feather pillows and duvets, a well-equipped kitchen and meticulous cleaning, all go to create a relaxing interior that is in keeping with the peaceful landscape outside.
The remoteness of island living encourages a satisfying way of re-using and revitalising - the kitchen shelves were rescued from the farm workshop; the utilitarian dining table was made for a seamstress, but now sports a bright oilcloth top; and an old drawer front, complete with lock, has been reworked to make a windowsill. Books and magazines to suit all tastes are plentiful, and by popular demand the TV has not been connected to a signal (though you can play DVDs). Evenings and wet afternoons are an ideal time to get together over a board game or jigsaw puzzle (we have plenty), or just to sit idly by the fire. We prefer to set our own style and standards, so tourism ratings have not been chased. We hope you will find that these speak for themselves.

Despite its slightly eccentric style, the house is always immaculately presented, and we take real pride in the fact that many of our visitors say that it is the best self-catering house they have ever stayed in, and they continue to return year on year. We hope you will enjoy it too!
